Arts Access Service

“Through the years I have been volunteering with Artlink I have been privileged to meet some very lovely and interesting people who each have had a very different life.  And I have gone to all kinds of events, exhibitions and performances.  As a non-car driver, I often choose to accompany someone mainly because this works out better rather than for the event itself.  As a result I have been pushed out of my usual comfortable choices for entertainment which has broadened my horizons, whether it is ‘The Ladyboys of Bangkok’ or a concert at the Usher Hall; all interesting outings in their different ways.”

The Arts Access service creates links between people who want to discover and enjoy the arts in Edinburgh. Our members go to a wide variety of events at theatres, galleries, museums, cinemas, historic buildings, sculpture parks… We do our best to ensure that the trickiest part of an Arts Access outing is choosing where to go. We provide ‘What’s On’ information to help with decision making, and then we book tickets, match members with volunteers who would like to accompany them and organise transport. It’s a door to door service, and it is important to us that both volunteers and members enjoy their experience.

My time commitment varies but I aim to attend an average of two or three events a month, fitted around other voluntary work and social activities. I’m pleased to provide transport and/or support as needed, in return for the company of interesting people, free entry to art exhibitions, plays, music and other events, including an opportunity to sing at an ‘Abba’ tribute concert!”

Members who are aged 80 and above can join our Vintage Club, and receive regular invitations to cultural events with a social aspect, from gallery tours and barge trips, to pantomime matinees and accessible bike trips.

Thank you so much for a wonderful afternoon.

I felt I came alive, I had nobody telling me not to speak or not to do things, I really really enjoyed it. Thank you so much for allowing me to be me!

  1. This sounds a wonderful Programme but I am not sure whether you could consider my husband for it.
I am actually looking for a regular outing for him on a weekly basis for a few hours.
The trouble is that he has Parkinson’s and P’s Dementia and I think that could stretch your volunteers too far, as he has mobility problems and the Dementia. He would need probably more attention than your volunteers could give.
