Introduction to Programme
Masses to update you on in the brochure this time. We have met with lots of
wards to talk to them about the future programme and what we can offer;
the take-up and response has been very positive. We also have exciting
news that Pentland and Canaan (previously Ward 14), who we have been
working with over the last year and more, have been shortlisted for Scotlands
Prestigious Dementia Awards. Well done to everyone involved. There is more
information about that later in the brochure.
In the current show, Amongst Other Things, you can see original artworks
that were made in collaborative environments. The works were made through
close one-to-one working relationships between contemporary artists and
previous and current patients and service users. In the shows we have been
thinking about how working together can dissolve hierarchies, bringing
people together through the process of making.
The arrangements of work at each hospital are both playful and reflective
and respond to the differences in each of the spaces. The works have been
selected for the exhibitions through their visual relationships and the stories
that arise between them. This is a look back at some of the great work that has
been made over the last couple of years. The show runs until January 2018,
which affords us the opportunity to further build a narrative around the work
and the process that these particular works grew out of. This will be tailored
to each space. Within the Royal Infirmary we will use one of the corridors
to contextualise the exhibition, including explanatory text, past and recent
photographs of patients working with the artists. Within the Royal Edinburgh
Mark Making
we have allowed space to tell the story of the patient artwork which has
been framed and displayed within the public corridors.
In our future programme we are interested in mentoring young talent. This will
introduce new and fresh ideas into the hospitals. To kick this off we will be
developing a series of commissions in the hospitals that will see young artists
coming onto wards and taking part in workshops. The work made as part
of these commissions will not necessarily be on show in the hospital gallery
spaces, but in the public and private spaces that you, as people who use the
hospitals, think are appropriate. There will be more info on this in the next
brochure, look out for information on how and when you can get involved.
If you would like to feedback or comment on the programme, all our email
addresses are at the back of the brochure, and we would love to hear from
you.
Artist Anne Elliot will be holding new workshops on wards at St Johns. These will
take inspiration from materials and techniques used to make the artworks in this
exhibition. The work that is made by staff and patients will be displayed in the
gallery space alongsideAmongst Other Things.
The gallery at St Johns is located on the second floor in the corridor leading to the
dining room.

Anthony Schrag
Western General
Anthonys idea for this project comes from the premise that the way we move is a
non-conventional way of communication. The group meets weekly to undertake a
variety of workshops including drawing, photography, choreography and mapping
activities which all reflect upon the role ofmovementwithin their work, and how it
can be used creatively within their daily practice.
The focus of the workshop relates to notions of identity, emerging from a general
realisation that the OT profession is not well understood, both within the hospital
and more generally. As participant Tracey suggests: No one would know what an
OT does unless they actually needed them. The project explores how movement
can be used to express and communicate their work in creative and new ways.

The New Hospital
The new hospital at the REH is now bustling with staff and patients; we have been
round every single ward to talk to you about workshops etc. and have been really
impressed with the new wards. Most wards have only been in for a short period but
overall it appears to be a very positive move and we look forward to working with
you all in the new hospital.
We hope that you have noticed the artworks in the public corridors of the hospital;
these are a combination of works from the NHS collection as well as almost 70
works produced by patients. The patients artworks were all made in an Artlink
making and masterclasses led by Artist Vanessa Lawrence in 2016. We have been
working closely with Becky Brazil, Arts Project Manager, GreenSpace/ArtSpace,
who was responsible for getting the works framed. We love them and the character
they bring to the new build and hope you agree with us. Thanks also to Jane
Lawrence, RSA who was responsible for selecting the work from the NHS collection
and Emma Cochrane, Capital Planning and Projects Team for all their help and
input.
Becky is also in the process of commissioning bespoke hinged art frames for all the
new wards. These should be in place by November when we will bring Vanessa
Lawrence back to do painting workshops on the wards. This means that each ward
will have a collection of patient artworks to display in your new frames.

To coincide with the new exhibition Amongst Other Things, each Wednesday
throughout August Claire Barclay worked alongside four participants at the Royal
Edinburgh.
Using the plants and surrounding environment of the glasshouse as inspiration, the
workshop explored different approaches to mark making through drawing and
painting. These techniques were developed into three-dimensional objects with
acetate, paper and wood. In the final week, the makers collaborated to construct
a temporary installation, bringing the different elements of their work together in a
visual way.

Pentland and Canaan
Royal Edinburgh
As mentioned in the introduction Pentland and Canaan (previously Ward 14) have
made it through to a shortlist of 3 in the category of best acute care initiative in
Scotlands Dementia Awards. Rigorously judged by a panel of senior health, social
service and third sector professionals alongside people with dementia and carers,
the Awards celebrate creative approaches, innovation and best practice in all
aspects of information, advice, care and support for people living with dementia.
We also had a celebration of the completion of the geodesic dome with a garden
party on Pentland ward, back in the summer - remember the summer? The
celebration was as much about the amazing journey Tom and artist James McLardy
have been on in creating and building the dome, with the help and input of the
wider learning team on Pentland. We had over 50 people come along to join in
the celebration including some wards from other hospitals; thanks to everyone who
made the day a big success.
The colour and wayfinding project for Pentland ward is now well underway
with Fiona McLachlan, an architect and Professor of Architectural Practice at the
University of Edinburgh. Fiona has visited the ward on several occasions to get
to know some of the residents and to speak with staff and carers. The aim was to
develop an understanding of the way in which the spaces are used, and to help
focus the colour installation in the most appropriate places on the ward.
Mark Making
31
Royal Edinburgh
Two themes are beginning to emerge, which will guide the design of the
installations:
the need to re-enforce the character and feel of specific spaces in the ward
as destinations with greater variety and identity
Fiona is now developing design ideas and will present these at the next carers
forum in mid-September. The intention is then to develop the project together
with a group of fourth year architecture students as part of a course on colour in
architecture, who will help install the work and paint key wall areas during the
autumn semester. This project is funded by a University of Edinburgh Innovation
Initiative Grant.
As well as the work we are doing with patients we are also exploring the idea of
touch in our work with Pentland and Canaan. We are bringing in Aisling Baskill,
Community Therapist, Healthy Life Centre to work with staff and relatives on both
wards. This was suggested by Frances Aitken and the interest and take up has been
great. Aisling will initially give hand, head and neck massage sessions to staff and
relatives, so they can experience for themselves first hand the benefits of massage.
Aisling will then deliver further sessions explaining and
demonstrating simple massage techniques to staff and relatives
in order that they can then use these techniques on family
members and patients.
